An important site in Brook and Piper: The Room with No Door , is the Statue of Liberty. For more than a century, the statue welcomed generations of immigrants and refugees to the United States. Liberty Island is open to the public 365 days per year for no charge. Ferry boats, for which there is a charge, bring visitors from both New York and New Jersey. Reservations need to be made in advance for the full experience of entering the statue and climbing the 354 steps to the crown. The torch, and the ladder to reach it, is not open to the public. Also on the island are a museum with interactive displays, artifacts and a gallery with the original 1886 torch. Free 35 minute tours meet at the flagpole.
